PEACE PARK PROJECT GAINS NEW PARTNERS & FUNDING, DEVELOPS AN UPDATED VISION FOR PEACE PARK10/26/2020 Peace Park - located next to the Grand Ave Water Tower - was founded and named by the late Otis Woodard and has been used as a safe community gathering space for more than 20 years. The Woodard family also used to maintain a "Share Shed" on the property, providing food, clothes, and more to anyone in need. Today, Peace Park partners are working to develop and implement an updated Vision for Peace Park - one that will reflect the peaceful intent of the park's creation... read more about the project's history and progress here. In early 2020, Grace Hill Settlement House and Peace Park project partners approached Green City Coalition about collaborating for the design and development of Peace Park, and to implement a vision developed by College Hill residents more than three years ago. The Peace Park project partners have since entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to help facilitate the collaboration and include the following partners and roles:
In the summer of 2020, Washington University hired Arbolope Studio to develop designs and construction plans for Peace Park - a necessary next step to move the project from resident vision and conceptual designs to development and construction. Arbolope worked with project partners to review materials from past community events and meetings, as well as renderings developed by Harvard design students through a neighborhood design charrette, to develop a vision that we hope reflects residents' interests and priorities. A Vision for Peace Park honors the site's legacy as a peaceful, safe, and supportive community space by incorporating its current assets, including:

The goal of the Wells Goodfellow Neighborhood Green Space Project – Phase I is to convert ~7 noncontiguous acres of vacant and abandoned lots to a passive recreation space that absorbs stormwater and provides a community open space amenity. The community green space location was determined through a combination of GIS-based computer modeling and community planning and participatory mapping workshops. The resultant location lies within a water problem area prone to combined sewer overflows, basement backups, and minor street flooding. In November 2017, residents engaged in a 3-day design charrette with HDR Inc. to develop conceptual designs for the project site. These plans were then further developed by SWT Design to construction documents with technical, grading, and seeding specifications. The purpose of this Request for Proposals is to implement Phase I construction of the green space as designed by residents and specified by SWT Design. The awarded contractor will be responsible for earthwork and material excavation, soil preparation and erosion control, and seeding in accordance with the provided specifications. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation, National Fish & Wildlife Foundation Five Star and Urban Waters Grant, and Missouri Department of Conservation, with the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation serving as the fiscal and contractual agent and St. Louis Development Corporation as the project manager. "On Nov. 6, 7 and 8, design professionals from around the country will gather in St. Louis for the ninth annual XTreme LA (Landscape Architecture) Challenge. Hosted by the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, the three-day charrette will explore water strategies relating to Project Clear, a Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) initiative that aims to improve water quality and reduce sewer overflow...
"This year’s XTreme LA Challenge will focus on the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood in north St. Louis, in an area that MSD and the Green City Coalition have earmarked for conversion to public open space. The visiting designers will work with Sam Fox School students and faculty to develop a series of actionable plans to address flood mitigation, biodiversity, habitat and public health — and to engage the local community as active partners in the design process."
