Through a series of five workshops - three neighborhood sessions and two youth sessions - Walnut Park neighbors identified approximately two acres of vacant properties lining Carter Park, separate only by an alley and vegetation overgrowth that attracted illegal dumping. The park, and vacant properties, are also visible from Northwest Academy of Law classrooms and track and field. Neighbors The location is also high priority for open space as a means of stormwater absorption and eligible for Urban Greening Program funds. Within this half-block lining the park (temporarily called the Carter Park Extension), 8 vacant buildings were demolished, followed by vegetation clearing and regrading by the Forestry Division. The remaining homeowner agreed to an alley closure, and Streets Department installed barricades to reduce access for illegal dumping. Northwest students painted the board-ups on vacant buildings facing the park and extension site, and installed sculptures lining Robin and Lillian Avenues. Guided by design suggestions from Northwest students and Walnut Park neighbors, GCC is slowly transitioning the landscape from turf and weeds to a native flowering mix that will only require mowing twice per year. These improvements to property conditions have reduced requests to the Citizens' Service Bureau for mowing, weeding, and debris removal. |

Students in after-school and summer-school programs offered by the Throwing and Growing Foundation - a non-profit operating out of a wing of Northwest Academy of Law & Social Justice - maintain a three-bed garden. Through a series of field trips in April 2018, the girls learned about urban agriculture, community gardens, and outdoor classrooms, and then explored vacant lots surrounding their school and created designs for a community garden and outdoor classroom of their own.
